Malawi, Africa

Here are specific areas we are partnering in reaching across the globe:

Malawi, described as the “warm heart of Africa,” is a small country in southern Africa that sits west of Mozambique. More than 90 percent of Malawi’s population is rural subsistence farmers. The population  suffers from extensive deforestation and over-cultivation. Serious    health problems such as tuberculosis, malaria, cholera, malnutrition,    and respiratory infections are widespread in Malawi, which also hasone of the world’s highest rates of HIV/AIDS infection. Issues such as these are only perpetuated by the fact that Malawi fights every year to feed its    people.

Malawi, located in southern Africa, has a population of approximately 12.5 million people of which 65% live below the poverty line. Over 22% of children under five in Malawi are underweight or malnourished.

The Mzimba district in northern Malawi is predominately rural. Eighty-five percent of the residents of Mzimba depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Three droughts in the past 10 years coupled with lack of training in sustainable agricultural methods prevents people from growing the necessary food for good nutritional development.

Fourteen percent of people in the Mzimba area are HIV-positive, which limits their ability for labor-intensive agricultural activities. Some people spend much of their time nursing their chronically ill relatives and neighbors while looking for ways to meet the needs of children who are orphaned and under their care.

 Human Development Index:

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, and standards of living for countries worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. It is used to distinguish whether the country is a developed, a developing, or an under-developed country, and also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life.

Countries fall into three broad categories based on their HDI: high, medium , and low human development.

 Low

Malawi: 164 out of 177

Mozambique: 172 out of 177

 Medium

Papua New Guinea: 145 out of 177

Partnering in Hope

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries is partnering with World Vision to train farmers in the Mzimba region of northern Malawi. Over 3,000 farmers will learn to grow nutrient-full crops such as soybeans, groundnuts, and cassava. Some will learn seed multiplication, integrated fish farming, irrigation techniques, and the benefits of collective marketing.

As a Nazarene congregation participating in the Famine, your donations go directly to this project affecting the lives of people in Nazarene congregations as well as the whole community.
